Planning for 2018

Hello Rochester GVP Friends!

To help keep folks up to date, will be trying out a blog/newsletter.  Sarah, Christy and I just returned from a retreat with state leads and we're exhausted and excited.

Here's what's instore in this first installment:

UPNEXT -
Vigil to #EndGunViolence

EVENTS
Moms Demand Action Birthday Bash January
Working toward June - Gun Violence Awareness Month

Goals and Organizing the ROC moms!

Vigil to #EndGunViolence : December 14, 2017 will mark 5 years since the shooting at Sandy Hook that murdered 20 children and 6 educators. Sandy Hook woke the nation to the epidemic of gun violence that occurs every day - and the mass shootings highlight the horror of the 'guns everywhere' agenda we need to confront.

The vigil will be held at Martin Luther King Jr. Park at Manhattan Square,353 Court St, Rochester, New York 14607.The vigil will begin at 7 PM and we hope to have a reception immediately after with community organizations. Many buildings in Rochester will be lit green in honor of Sandy Hook. The ice will be full of children and families skating.

Rochester's Mother's Dream Quilt and Surivor Quilt - We will be embarking on a quilting endeavor in the coming months to craft TWO quilts.  One will be for the Mother's Dream Quilt and we'll also be helping with creating a quilt that will remain here in Rochester. If you know of any one who has been personally affected by gun violence, this quilt will bring together our stories. Stay tuned for "Quilting Bee" events.  Survivors are encouraged to personalize their panels with either fabric from an item from a loved one, or a personalized piece with writing or perhaps a transfer of the individual.  Please contact Cha Ron for more questions.

MOMS BIRTHDAY in January - January will mark 5 years of Moms Demand Action and we're going to celebrate community, activism and the steps we've taken to MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN!  Bring your kids! We'll have some activities for kids of all ages and of course some treats to enjoy! We'll be announcing a Saturday date and time soon! Be on the lookout!

We're also hoping to try something new later in January - think of it as "CHANGE ON TAP."  We're working on hosting an event with PittsForward to invite the community into a local pub, enjoy a pint,  and learn about ways to connect with their community. We'll also be inviting local leaders to meet and greet and discuss policty.

June 2018 Gun Violence Awareness Month - We're beginning to plan events for June for Gun Violence Awareness Month - let us know if you have ideas. One area we're investigating is hosting a film screening. There are several films such as Newtown, Armor of Light, and Making a Killing.  All excellent documentaries.

Goals for 2018 - Future meet ups will provide more opportunities for members to get involved - and they're really easy, manageable commitments! Remember - YOU have circles of influence.  Can you invite Moms to table at an event? Share the BeSMART message to parents of teens at your school or church?  Willing to host a few friends to learn about BeSMART? 2018 will have lots of opportunity to get engaged in the election - from visiting Albany in March to learning about and maybe even helping with local races and phone banking.

Organizing the ROC Moms! In order to build our organization sustianably, Moms has recommended a model focusing on our membership and data for our local organizing.  Sarah will be providing leadership to Membership  - as well as continue with her passion in legislative outreach.  Christy will be providing leadership to Data as well as supporting our BeSMART initiatives, as well as continuing to light up our city of Rochester in the appropriate colors like orange for June and green for Sandy Hook in December! I will continue in the role of lead - particularly in areas of events, survivor outreach, and community outreach. Speaking of outreach - we're hoping to work more with the rural areas around Rochester to support and empower our members there, as well as continue to build relationships and collaboration with communities in Rochester.

Thanks for reading and as always - feel free to contact me if you have questions or suggestions! Cha Ron
